Environmental terrorism is the purposeful destruction of a natural resource by a non-governmental organization in order to force a non-sustainable change. For example, terrorist organizations have used explosives to destroy water dams (destruction of natural resource) to flood communities downstream (non-sustainable, terrorist goal).

Environmental terrorism is often confused with "eco-terrorism", where terrorist acts are committed against an industry or entity in the name of sustainability. For example, eco-terrorist organizations have set housing construction projects on fire (an act of terror against an industry) in order to prevent the land from being developed (sustainable goal).
